For today’s fabricators in Grand Rapids, one consistent challenge is to ensure a workpiece leaves the shop finished. This means a complete lack of flaws – including burrs. Metalworking shops have always found ways to remove burrs. Aggressive methods such as vibratory deburring are commonplace in most shops. However, for parts that require finesses, this is not the solution – thermal deburring services are.

What Is Thermal Deburring (TEM)?

TEM is a system to remove burrs resulting from such machining and production methods as drilling and milling. To remove them gently without leaving dings or scratched requires a gentle touch. To achieve this, fabricators position the workpieces in a combustion chamber in the TEM system. Into it is fed a mixture of gases. A spark ignites the gas-enveloped workpieces. A controlled burn occurs. This action completely oxidizes the burrs evenly, swiftly and briefly while leaving the actual workpieces completely untouched and unaffected in any way.

TEM is an effective means of removing burrs from many metals including:

  • Aluminum
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Cast iron
  • Stainless steel
  • Steel
  • Zinc die casting

However, employing thermal deburring services can be imperfect if the right type of preparation is lacking.

Preparation Work

Whether you work in a small shop in Grand Rapids or a large firm in San Diego, you understand the importance of preparing a workpiece for machining. This also applies to TEM. Before thermal deburring, it is essential to remove all swarf compressed into holes. Fabricators must also remove any excess oil, therefore preventing premature ignition within a TEM system. At the end of the process, further cleaning will ensure the workpieces are now ready for customers.

Thermal Deburring Services

Producing products that are ding and burr free can be challenging. For parts that require sensitive handling, thermal deburring can provide the solution. Including proper preparation work as part of the thermal deburring services ensures the product emerges not only deburred but also clean and visually attractive.
