The roofing industry continues to innovate and develop new roofing products that simply couldn’t have been imagined 100 years ago. While most countries rely on two or three typical roofing products, here in the US you have five, three of which would qualify as the most notable: asphalt, metal, and slate. Asphalt Roofing
Asphalt roofing is the most popular and the lowest cost of the three. Asphalt shingles are comprised of a fiberglass or fibrous mat, coated with asphalt and covered with crushed minerals. The shingles generally have three tabs that are used for nailing them to the roof. It’s reliable and common, and easy to install and replace, but it isn’t as resistant to wind and hail as some of the other materials.
Metal Roofing
Metal roofing is very durable, though copper is vulnerable to hail, as is aluminum. Stone-coated steel tile roofing is made of individual steel tiles that are coated with an adhesive and then covered with crushed stone that is sealed in place for a finish. While metal panel roofs are durable and easy to install and admired by residential roofing contractors, they can sometimes be affected by vortex shedding, which can tear them off of a roof if they aren’t properly installed.
Slate Roofing
Slate roofing consists of cut pieces of thin shale that are secured to the roof in a similar fashion to asphalt shingles and stone-coated steel tiles. Some slate roofs are uniform, with roughly the same size tiles, while others use tiles of different size and dimension, giving the roof some dimensional features.
