When it comes to choosing body jewelry, how do you know which material is best for your piercing? Gold barbell body jewelry, titanium nose studs, stainless steel lip rings – there are so many different types of jewelry to choose from that it’s a bit confusing! Your local piercing parlor probably specializes in a certain type of jewelry, which is what they’ll push you to buy after you get your nose, lip or navel pierced. But if you’re shopping online, the choice is yours! So what material is best?
Titanium
Titanium is a great choice if you’re sensitive or have metal allergies. Some people’s bodies react badly to stainless steel, so if your piercing isn’t healing or you’re noticing irritation, switching to a titanium ring or stud could be a great move. Titanium also comes in a wide range of colors from the natural grey metal to purple, green and even rainbow hues!
Gold
Hindged Gold barbell body jewelry or gold rings are a popular choice and 14k gold body jewelry is both beautiful and incredibly durable. Gold has been used for centuries and is a natural metal which is safe to put into the body. You may pay more for gold body jewelry but it will last a lifetime and you can choose some really beautiful, unusual pieces that will get you noticed!
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is one of the most common metals for body jewelry and it’s what most piercers will initially use in your piercing, whilst it heals. It’s hypoallergenic and won’t tarnish; in addition it’s also very durable. However, many people don’t like the dark grey color of stainless steel and opt for colored titanium or gold instead.
Choosing the right metal for your piercing is a personal choice, however you should always keep the initial piece of jewelry in until your piercing has healed – your piercer will advise you how long this should be.
