When selling diamonds, you’ll need to understand the quality of gems you have. The only way to know that you’re getting a fair price for what you’re selling is to understand the value of your diamonds. Here are some tips for doing exactly that:

Clarity

The transparency of diamonds matters. The clearer a diamond is, the more valuable it is. This is because diamonds are not usually clear by nature, so a natural diamond that is close to clear is rare and therefore worth much more on the market. Lab-created diamonds are almost always exceedingly clear, but because this clarity does not occur naturally, they are worth far less.

Color

Diamonds come in a range of natural colors, but the closer the diamond is to “white” – which is a state of colorlessness- the more valuable it is.

Cut

The cut of your diamond refers to the way it is designed to catch and reflect the light. Cuts with more facets often command a higher price, since these stones are more dazzling and more in-demand.

Carat

How big is your diamond? Size really does matter when it comes to gems. Larger stones are worth more, but the difference in fractions of a carat can mean hundreds or even thousands of dollars in value.

Certification

You may not have access to the certification for your diamond, but if you do, this can greatly increase your chances of getting the maximum amount in return for its sale. This certification may also be referred to as the laboratory report and evaluates all these previous factors to determine the overall quality of your gem.

Selling diamonds don’t have to be difficult. Talk to a licensed jewelry buyer for more information about what quality of jewels you have and what the fair market value of your stones is. You – and your bank account – will be glad you did!
