Your child’s first day of elementary school is sure to be exciting for both of you. Rest assured, your child is likely to adjust to elementary school quickly and easily. However, there are some preparations you can make ahead of time to make it a little easier.

First of all, if your child has never been to a structured program like preschool, it’s important that you implement some daily structure a few months before he or she begins school. A child who has constantly been at home with Mom or Dad, and hasn’t had a regular daily schedule may have difficulty adjusting to a school routine.

Be sure your child is well socialized, as well. Again, a preschool program or Mother’s morning out a few days a week will accomplish this for you. Children have to learn about socializing in a group setting, taking turns, and sharing.

Be sure your child is on a proper sleeping and waking schedule before school starts, too. Get your child into the routine of getting up in the morning at the time that will be required to make it to school on time, and be sure they go to bed early enough to get plenty of sleep. Before school begins, find out if there will be a nap time or rest time at school. If not, it’s important to ease your child out of any daily nap routine he or she might have.

Talk with your child about what to expect, and visit the school, if possible, before the first day to allow your child to see the classroom and meet the teacher.

While it’s important to make preparations, it’s also important not to create stress. Keep the conversations light, and always reassure your child that school will be fun. The elementary schools in Garland, Texas are waiting to provide your child with a great education.
