The days of heavy wires, brackets and heavy head frames is long gone and gone with them is the associated “nerd factor”. Today, kid’s braces on Long Island are more than dental appliances; they are downright cool; they have become fashion accessories.

It has always been hard for parents to convince their teens in particular that wearing braces is good for them in the long run; teens are not interested in the long run, the want to be “in”, they do not want to be considered as a social outcast. Now these image conscious youngsters can select from an array of options that maintain the ever important “cool factor”, these options include brackets which are clear or tooth colored, bands and wires in every imaginable color and the newest kids braces on Long Island; Invisalign.

Those who opt for Invisalign braces over traditional braces wear a series of clear devices called Aligners. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks and then changed for a new one. Each new set of Aligners moves the teeth perceptively until they eventually reach the position that the orthodontist wants. These aligners are worn throughout the day and night but they are simple to slip out when eating, brushing and flossing.

These new kids’ braces on Long Island have a number of advantages for both the teenager and the parents:

  • The visits to the orthodontist only take place at about six week intervals. During these infrequent visits the progress is monitored and the patient gets the next few Invisalign aligners.

  • The aligners are comfortable to wear so they do not get in the way of the normal activities of a kid. Band practice and sports for example can be played as if there were no braces at all; this is not the case with traditional wire braces.

  • The Invisalign device is more hygienic as it can be removed for oral care.

Even with these great advantages the fact that they are nearly invisible is the primary reason why teens love them. As the aligner is inconspicuous the teen wearer can still fit in socially and have orthodontic treatment simultaneously. The students who wear them are the first to say that they are comfortable and no one, even the wearer knows they are on.
